SOCIAL INNOVATION

+ PHILANTHROPY AND THE PUBLIC SECTOR

In the near future, cities will face increasing social, climatic, economic and mobility challenges. To answer them, they must find allies. Could philanthropy be one of them?

The complexity of the issues addressed and the diversity of the partners involved necessarily lead to a reconsideration of the existing modus operandi in philanthropy.

+ What changes do foundations need to make to help find exceptional responses to exceptional situations?

+ What new avenues can private, public and community foundations pursue?

+ What risks is grant-making philanthropy willing to take to support the development of innovative, equitable and resilient communities?

The discussions will be inspired by two case studies:

+ On an international level, the Grand Bargain initiative set up in Detroit following the City's bankruptcy in 2013, where a consortium of foundations has committed to supporting the city's revitalization with a contribution of US$370 million over 20 years;

+ At the local level, the McConnell Foundation will share the lessons learned from an initiative initiated in collaboration with the City of Montreal.
